Little Wishes: “I’m So Glad You’re Here”

Six-year-old Jakob, (AKA Joyful Jake) had a thing for hospital blankets. Not one blanket. Not two. But as many as he could possibly gather. If you walked into his hospital room, you might have had a hard time finding him underneath the mound on his bed. He loved the weight of them and that they seemingly grounded him in the middle of everything that felt uncertain. Nurses would peek in at the growing pile and laugh. “Jakob… how many blankets do you need?” From somewhere under the layered mountain, a little voice would answer, “One more.”

There was always room for one more…

This was Jakob. He found comfort in simple things and joy in hard places. His family called him “Joyful Jake” because he ran through lawn sprinklers shouting, “This is AMAZING!” He raced toward the playground gates, spotting children he did not know in the distance with a “YES! There are friends here!”  He would burst into rooms with a crazy morning bedhead, announcing, “I’m so glad you’re here!”  as if your presence was the best surprise of his day.

He knew he had limitations, but he never let those get in his way.

Jakob was born with a variety of complex medical conditions and spent much of his six short years in and out of hospitals. He survived sepsis twice, adapted to an ostomy bag at just four-years-old, and faced countless procedures along the way. His parents, Aaron and Kristen, worked tirelessly to keep him healthy, but frequent hospital stays became part of their reality. Packing up and settling into the hospital room was never easy, but over time, it became routine.

Then came the hospital stay that felt different and that is when Little Wishes met Jakob. Days turned into weeks and then months in the intensive care unit, and Aaron and Kristen took turns, never leaving his side. Jakob’s lungs were weakening, and he was fighting with everything he had.

In a time when control felt out of reach and choices were limited, Little Wishes asked a simple but powerful question: “What do you want Jakob?” That question is at the heart of Little Wishes. In the middle of critical care, we give children something that belongs to them. The power to choose. The chance to say what would bring comfort and the ability to decide what joy looks like in that moment.

Jakob did not hesitate.

Can you guess what it was? A weighted blanket, because what is one more blanket?  Video games were also on the list, as well as his favorite food,  Chick-fil-A. He loved their famous nuggets with wholehearted devotion and enjoyed them as his final meal.

When it became clear that Jakob’s time was short, we came back. Not with our usual banter of celebration and green tutu’s, but with a quiet presence. We entered his room offering what we call a “silent wish” to honor Jakob.

“When they realized it was going to be Jakob’s last day, Little Wishes was instrumental in the memorial process,” recalls Jakob’s Grandma. “They ensured our son and daughter-in-law received priceless keepsakes including an EKG of Jakob’s final heartbeat, handprints and footprints and molds that captured the shape of him. Things that we will cherish forever.”

“When you are in those final moments, it is overwhelming you really do not know what you need” Kristen remembered. “But when Little Wishes came into the room they knew exactly what it was we needed and made us feel not alone.”

Jakob always believed there was room for one more blanket, and in the hardest chapter of his story we made sure there was room for one more act of kindness. One more moment of comfort. One more reminder that this family was not walking through it alone.

Jakob, we are so glad you were here.

A little reminder of Jakob that greets his family every day. 💚
